Cheryl specializes in individual, couples and family therapy while also helping others succeed in life as a motivational coach.
Tell us about your business. What product or service do you provide? Who is your target audience?
I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and work with individuals, couples, and families. I provide support and practical feedback to help you effectively address the challenges someone could be facing in life. With compassion and understanding, I work with individuals to help build on their strengths and attain the personal growth to live out the successful life they were destined to lead. I always had an intense desire to understand what it is that makes us human.
There are many things throughout my life that have challenged the very fabric of who I have become today. I believe that we all come with our own set of unique experiences, talents; which we can transform that within us to use for the higher good of the world.
What would you say makes your business different from the competition in your field?
I considered the implications of a practice that included more than therapy, however, I bring a world of life experiences. Being married for over 22 years, a mother of 6 children and an entrepreneur for 16 years of a Group Family Daycare before becoming a Therapist has opened up worlds of knowledge that can’t be found in a textbook.
Why did you become an entrepreneur? What does owning your own business mean to you?
I believe that an entrepreneur is driven by vision and it was my vision that drove me to start my 1st business when I was just 24 years old. Married with 2 children and one on the way; working as a clerk in the Public Library most of my monies were going to childcare. I started my 1st business in 1998 “Forever Young Daycare” where I worked from home raising my children and other children in the neighborhood. I worked over 50 hours a week as Director/Owner for 16+ years while always making time for my family.
As I continued on with the business I returned back to school. WhenI earned My Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, it was a no-brainer to Start my Very Own Private Practice. On March 1, 2017, I opened the doors to Clarke Marriage And Family Therapy, PLLC.
What or who has been your greatest influence in business and why?
I don’t really view my business and/or line of profession as having a singular voice or persons that have influenced me in my business. What I am noticing that through my journey as a therapist we as a whole, clinicians are moving more collaborative voices of therapists. Whereas we are gleaming from the past and present helping one another with entering into private practices, negotiate rates and the possibilities of forming unions so we can advance in our profession. Throughout much of history, the therapist’s feminist movement has not only pave the path, which has proven that personal transformation can only happen when we join together to create social change.
What would you say is your greatest professional accomplishment to date?
Tell us about a time when things did not go the way you expected it to. What did you learn from the experience?
Being an entrepreneur can be just as rewarding as it is challenging. Owning a practice has been an eye-opening experience. No longer are you looking for a weekly or biweekly check from an employer. My original goal was to get on insurance panels, however, I quickly found out a vital lesson the hard way.. Setting up my practice accepting health insurance was going to be my main source of income. I thought I could used my current credentials that I was using for the past 4 years however I needed to start the insurance credentialing process from scratch. I was informed that it could be a three-month waiting period or not be accepted at all; due to certain insurances not taking my type of licensure! Now I’m only accepting out-of pocket and unable to accept insurance until fully being accepted by insurance panels.
Do you have any new projects coming up? If so, let’s talk about it.

What’s the worst business advice you received? How did the advice impact your business?
The worst advice that I’ve ever received as a small business owner came from someone who believed just paying minimum wage.
I’ve learned that when an employee has an amazing work performance and loyalty it’s important to award them accordingly….by letting them know you appreciate them. Pay them for what they are worth.
